Daniel Lee Fisk, 77, died peacefully in his home in Allegan, MI, on Wednesday, August 9, 2023. Dan’s health had recently deteriorated after 60 years of being a Type-1 diabetic and more recently from dementia. He was lovingly cared for at home by his wife, Kay Fisk.
The one characteristic that defines Dan’s life is devotion:
● Above all, Dan was convinced that God loved him (and everyone else), and he accepted this gift and devoted his life to Christ at age 18.
● He fell in love with Kay Roeper, married her in November 1978 and told her that he loved her more than 32,127 times — at least twice a day for their 44-year marriage. His devotion to her was never in doubt. (She was just as devoted to him, but especially so during the last two and a half years when Dan required 24-hour care.)
● Dan was a devoted father to three daughters: Rebecca Lynn Cook, Abbey Louise Fisk and Amanda Lee Fisk. The girls all knew their Dad loved them (and their families). He cheered at sporting events, was generous with his time, helped with any building project, and made sure they had everything they needed. If asked what he was most proud of, Dan always answered “our daughters.”
● From the time he was a young man, Dan volunteered at church: Haven Reformed in Parchment, Covey Hill Baptist in Gobles, Gull Lake Bible Church, The Chapel, and Gracespring Bible Church in Richland, Grace Bible Church in Ann Arbor, and First Baptist Church in Allegan. He was a greeter, bus driver, trustee, handyman, grounds and facilities manager — if there was a way to serve, Dan was there.
● He worked as a Lithographer at Birch Printers and BC Litho until the business closed. He operated his own lawn care business, “Blades of Dexter,” until he moved. At every job, Dan stayed until the very, very end and then swept the floor before closing the door.
● He was also deeply devoted to his lawnmower — the joy he got from maintaining a pristine lawn was immeasurable. We’re pretty sure he watered and fertilized thoroughly just so he could mow more often. He might have even done a few extra laps with the blades up just for the fun of it.
Dan was born in Parchment, MI, on October 29, 1945, to Bill & Louise (Houtman) Fisk. He graduated from Parchment High School in 1963. His childhood was spent in the kitchen with his mother, building homes with his father, at the home of his grandparents Glen & Jennie Fisk, and thoroughly enjoying North Lake in Gobles with the extended Houtman family. Dan is survived by his younger sister, Donna (and Ray) VanIddeking and their son, Ryan, as well as Dan’s younger brother, Bret Fisk, and his children: Claire, Mark, and Will.
He is also survived by his three daughters and their families: Rebecca (Cook) Martin, her husband, Sam, and their two children: Andrew and Zachary. Abbey (Fisk) Streich, her husband, Isaac, and their two children: Nevaeh and Tyler. Amanda (Fisk) Pennock, her husband, Peter, and their three children: Kennah, Daphne, and Oliver.
A Memorial Celebration and luncheon will be held at noon, Thursday, August 24, 2023, at First Baptist Church in Allegan officiated by Pastor Nathan Smith of FBC Allegan and Pastor Tyson Lemke from Grace Bible Church of Ann Arbor. All are welcome to attend. There will be no visitation or graveside service.
