Cheshire Twp., Allegan, MI, died Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at Meadow Woods Nursing Home, Bloomingdale Twp. Mr. Godfrey was born Dec. 16, 1910 in Allegan, the son of Leon and Ida (Maurer) Godfrey. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Allegan. He had owned and operated the Godfrey General Store in Cheshire Twp. for more than 30 years and had farmed all of his life. He loved to garden and was actively involved in his communities. He served on the Allegan General Hospital Board for many years and the Bloomingdale Telephone Board for 44 years, serving several years as president. He was a member of the Allegan Masonic Lodge #111 for more than 60 years. Surviving are 4 children, Donald and Joan Godfrey of Alma, Robert and Shirley Godfrey of Grandville, Richard and Leora Godfrey of Bloomingdale and Mary Skowyra of St. Louis, MO; 8 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 5 sisters-in-law, Gail Brindley and Lorraine and Ken Heckman all of Allegan, Joyce and John DeCrocker of Kalamazoo, Lila Dickerson of Bloomingdale and Esther Godfrey of Wayland. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ella, and brother, Hod. Friends may meet with the family from 4-7 p.m. Sunday at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel, where funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Don Miller officiating and with a masonic service by the Bloomingdale-Hudson Masonic Lodge #221.
