Obituary

Wayne John Kooy, known affectionately as Wayne to his friends and family, passed away peacefully of natural causes on April 28, 2024, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Born on April 26, 1932, in Lansing, Illinois, Wayne's life was marked by a spirit of adventure and a remarkable aptitude for creation and innovation. Wayne's journey began as the son of Cornelius and Alice (VeldKamp) Kooy. He grew up alongside his siblings, forging a path that would be guided by his intelligence and creativity. Wayne was a proud graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, a field in which he excelled and became a highly successful engineer, working for multiple companies throughout Michigan. His professional achievements were paralleled by a personal life rich with hobbies and interests that showcased his adventurous and creative spirit. Wayne was a master woodworker and craftsman, known for his ability to build and fix anything he set his hands on. His family and friends were often the recipients of his beautiful woodwork, including bowls, bookcases, tables, and cradles. Wayne's zest for life extended to building recumbent bikes, dune buggies for tearing up the sands in Silver Lake, Michigan, and engaging in water skiing, sail boating, and even rollerblading well into his later years.

Wayne's is survived by children, Susan (Rick) Williams, David (Elaine) Kooy, and Donald (Patti) Kooy; his siblings, Dale (Shirley) Kooy and Glenn (Carrie) Kooy; his cherished nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Joyce (DenHartog) Kooy; his parents and siblings Allen Kooy, Ronald Kooy, and Lorraine Wiers. The most important thing in Wayne's life was his faith in Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior. He was a cherished member of several churches and actively attended and supported them his entire life. He wanted everyone in his family and his friends to know and love the Lord as he did.
