Obituary

age 92 of Hopkins, MI, passed away Friday, January 13, 2006. Mr. Weick was born February 23, 1913 in Monterey Twp., the son of Fred and Maude (Dendel) Weick. Surviving are 3 children and their spouses, Bill and Joan Weick of Gun Lake, Mary Lou and George Adams and Laurie Weick-Wood and Bob Wood all of Indian Lake; 6 grandchildren, Dan Adams, Phil Adams, Mary Beth Kelly, Julie Staple, John Weick, and Rita Betcher; 18 great-grandchildren; 1 brother and his wife, Bob and Ruth Weick of Gun Lake; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 64 years, Maxine, and 2 brothers, Donald and Melbourne. He lived in Hopkins all of his life and was owner of Weick's Foodtown in Hopkins. He was a charter member of the Lions Club from 1947 to 1997 and was honored by the Club for 25 years of sponsorship of an annual trip to a Detroit Tiger ball game. He was a faithful fan of the Tigers and he and Maxine loved to go to the Tiger's Spring Training Games in Florida, where they spent the winters in their home in Zephyrhills. He had served on the Hopkins School Board and he and Maxine loved to go to football and basketball games. Vernon also served as mayor of Hopkins and was honored by the Village of Hopkins, serving as "Grand Marshall" of their annual 4th of July parade. Vernon and Maxine belonged to the Michigan Avion Travel Club and enjoyed trips to Alaska, Ireland, Mexico and South America. They served as Regional Governor of the Michigan Unit from 1987-1988 and were leaders for several travelcades in Michigan, around the Great Lakes and Maritime Provinces. Vernon loved to fish and hunt and went deer hunting with his father and brothers for 73 years. Friends may meet with the family from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Hopkins Chapel, www.gordenfuneral.com. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Hopkins United Methodist Church. Pastor Linda Burton officiating. Interment Sacred Heart Cemetery, Watson Twp. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hopkins Sports Boosters, Wings of Hope Hospice or the Hopkins Library.
