of Plainwell formerly of Allegan, went to be with her Lord and Savior on a beautiful Sunday morning, April 6, 2008 surrounded by her loving family. Shirley's passing took place after a long courageous battle with Rheumatoid Arthritis. She was born November 22, 1927 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Almon and Clara (Barton) Townsend. She was a graduate of Allegan High School, Class of 1945. Shirley worked at the Allegan General Hospital as a Licensed Practical Nurse for over 20 years, most of which was spent in the Nursery. On December 30, 1949 Shirley married Neil, who survives, also surviving are her 4 daughters, Christine and Richard Ballast of WI, Lois and Harry Nielsen of Allegan, Joyce and Richard Smith of Otsego and Amy and Mike Staton of Baroda, 11 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was a very loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. Shirley spent her life ministering to others, sharing her wisdom through spiritual guidance, constant prayers and Bible scholarship, as evidenced by her adult women's Sunday School Class. Her love of horses also gave her opportunities to share Christ with young people through camping ministries and 4-H. Her love for reading showed in her generous donations of both books and time to area church libraries. No matter what limitations her illness caused, she always found ways to serve others. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at 11 am with a luncheon to follow at the Merson Church, 3313 102nd Ave., Gobles. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Merson Church for Handicap Facility Renovations. Arrangements by the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel.
