Obituary

of Wayland, died Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at the Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. Mr. Hempen was born February 19, 1925, in Carlyle, IL, the son of Henry and Bessie (Penter) Hempen. Zeb was a Veteran of the United States Navy, having served during WWII. He was a member of the Epiphany Lutheran Church in Dorr, and had worked for over 25 years with General Motors in Kalamazoo. Zeb and his wife, Ruth, owned and operated Schnable Lake Campground in Martin from 1975-1989, and were members of the Kazoo Kampers for many years. He volunteered countless hours to Muscular Dystrophy Assoc. and was also a member of the Martin Lions Club and helped out during many Bingo nights. He worked at Home Depot in Plainwell from 2003 - 2006. Zeb was a skilled wood worker and loved to spend time on a project. Surviving are his wife, Ruth, 3 children, Nancy and Richard Bottorff of IN, Fritz and Rhonda Shull of Monroe, and Lindsey Shull and her husband Robert Strahl of Grand Rapids, 3 grandchildren, Keli, Adam and Alexa, 2 great grandchildren, Zander and Zoey, 1 brother, Carl and Francis Hempen, 2 sisters, Helen Hempen and Harriet Minton all of IL, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Zeb was preceded in death by his son, Paul, daughter, Diana, 1 sister, Violet, 3 brothers, Henry, Lawrence, and Albert. Friends may meet with the family on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel, where the funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11 am. Pastor Jonathon T. Krenz officiating. Interment East Martin Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Epiphany Lutheran church in Dorr or the Muscular Dystrophy Assoc.
