Allegan Twp., formerly of Cheshire Twp., died Thursday, August 23, 2007 at Golden Orchards in Fennville. Mr. Mellen was born October 11, 1911 in Chicago, IL, the only child of Walter S. and Pearl C. (Seelye) Mellen. From the age of five, he lived with his family on a farm in Cheshire Twp., and attended the Moon School through the eighth grade. He attended Allegan High School for 2 years. He worked in and around Allegan as an electrician through 1941. He left Allegan in 1942, and in April of 1979 returned to live near Allegan in retirement in Dumont Creek Estates. In early 1942, he was employed as an Electrical Inspector for the Army Corps of Engineers during the construction of Camp Atterbury at Columbus, IN. Upon completion of that project, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in December of 1942. During his enlistment, he served in Ship Repair in the Norfolk Navy Yard, and as a Technical Advisor for eighteen months in the Navy Supply Corps on Guam in the Mariana Islands. He was honorably discharged Dec. 24, 1945, with the rank of Chief Electrician's Mate, having received a citation "For Excellent Service...." He graduated cum laude from Miami Univ. in Oxford, OH in 1952, with a Bachelor's Degree in General Business and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Beta Gamma Sigma. In 1952, he was employed by DairyPak an Ohio Corporate subsidiary of the Corporation now known as Champion International, one of the nation's largest integrated manufacturers of forest products, from forest lands to finished building and paper products. During his employment, he served as Maintenance Foreman, Assistant Plant Manager, Engineering Manager, Corporate Secretary, and in 1959, was appointed as Administrative Assistant to the President of the DairyPak Subsidiary Corporation. He served in that assignment until retirement on Nov. 1, 1976. Schuyler was a long-term contributor to the Allegan Hospital Nurses Scholarship Program, a special plan for nurses, originated by Sylvia Simons. He retained 70 acres of land, his boyhood home, in Cheshire Twp., which his grandfather, Vinson H. Seelye, purchased in 1906. About 30 acres had always been a woodland. In April of 1998, he gave this land to the Allegan General Hospital. Money from the sale of the land is represented by the Schuyler Endowment in the Allegan General Hospital Foundation. His primary beneficiary is the Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of America, Inc., specifically the local Affiliate Member, known locally as Dollars for Scholars. The investment income from the Schuyler V. Mellen Endowment Fund will be used for scholarships awarded to Allegan High School graduates for post-high school education: college, university or vocational school. Schuyler held memberships in the Presidents Club of Miami University, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion. Visitation will be held Monday from 6-8 p.m. at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel, where funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. Pastor Ray Sundell, from the Fennville United Methodist Church, officiating. Military honors by the Otsego V.F.W. Post #3030, with John Neese presiding, will follow in the family plot in Lindsley Cemetery, Cheshire Twp. Memorial contributions may be made to Cheshire Twp. 4-H or Dollars for Scholars.
