Obituary

Otsego, MI, died, Wednesday, July 6, 2005 at the Crystal Woods Adult Foster Care in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Hicks was born August 28, 1910 in Allegan, the daughter of Roscoe R. and Grace E. (Case) Shirley. Ruth graduated from Kalamazoo Central in 1929, and attended Parson's Business School in Kalamazoo. She married George Edward Hicks on December 24, 1933. She worked at the A & P grocery store in Otsego for more than 10 years. At one time, she was very active at the Congregational Church in Otsego, where she taught Sunday School and was past President of the Ladies Guild under Rev. Seth Clay. She was an excellent seamstress and artist. Surviving are her daughter, Susan and Neil Browne of Otsego; daughter-in-law, Helen Hicks of Kalamazoo; 7 grandchildren, George L. and Jan Hicks, Joy Hicks, Jeanna and Brian Quigley, Joanna and Scott McNees, Steven and Melissa Augustine, Christine and Dan Burley and Leslie Anne Howard; 24 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband George E., son George Jr., great grandson, Nicholas Burley, sister, Marie Van Sulpen, brother, John R. Mc Dermott, and step father, Roy Mc Dermott. Friends may meet with the family Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Plainwell, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Fr. Terry Haughn officiating. Interment Trowbridge Methodist Cemetery, Trowbridge Twp. Memorials may be made to the St. Stephens Church Building Fund. Arrangements by the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel.
