Allegan Twp., MI, died Sunday, February 11, 2007 at the Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo. Mr. Thayer was born May 5, 1919 in Allegan Co., the son of Eugene and Clarabelle (Marcellus) Thayer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during WWII in Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the CCC's, a life member of the Military Order of the Cootie, the Otsego V.F.W. Post #3030, the Blind Veterans Assoc., and a member of the WWII Army 107th engineers. He retired from Kalamazoo County, working in the maintenance dept. Surviving are 2 children, Royal Jr. and Beth Thayer of Otsego and Kathleen Bitzel of Allegan; 6 stepchildren, Melinda and Louis Winters of Kalamazoo, Michael Gleason of Allegan, Margaret Wright of Kentucky, Nancy Bailey of Colorado, Dee Finch of Tennessee and Tim and Deb Gleason of Minnesota; many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 3 wives, Audrey Thayer in 1964, Nancy Thayer in 1973 and Elsie Thayer in 2006, 1 daughter, Charlene Thayer in 1964, stepson, John Gleason in 1995, 2 brothers, Paul and Ed Thayer and stepbrother, Russell Sinkler. Memorial services will be held Friday at 11 a.m at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel. Pastor Tom Sinkler officiating. Interment of cremains at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Blind Veterans Assoc or Otsego V.F.W. Post #3030.
