Obituary

Allegan, MI, passed away peacefully, in the presence of his family, Sunday, March 8, 2009 after a long battle with cancer. Roger was born July 2, 1921 in Pullman, MI, the son of Edith (Hurlbut) Morton. He graduated from Allegan High School in 1939. During high school, he worked at Armintrout's Grocery in Allegan. After high school, he graduated from the Civilian Pilot Primary Program in Cadillac, MI; the Secondary and Cross Country Aviation Program in Detroit, and the Aviation Instructor Course at Shephard Field, TX. He graduated from the Aviator Cadet Program as a Flight Officer. Roger served active duty during WWII as a First Lt. in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1941-1945. He had been employed at Hardings Market in Plainwell as the manager of the meat dept. for 34 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Allegan and the Allegan Elks Club. Surviving are his wife, of 60 A½ years, Adeline (Edwards), whom he married June 20, 1948; they have three children, Mike (Diane) Morton, Ron (Sandy) Morton and Pam (Mike) Miller; 9 grandchildren, Hollie (Bishop) Bartoni, Thomas (Jamie) Morton, John (Lacey) Morton, Kathryn Morton, Cody Morton, Amanda Miller, Luke Miller, C.J. (Autumn) Miller and Jordan Miller; 2 great-grandchildren, Baillie and Brodie Morton; 2 sisters, Jeanette Colman and Marilynn Hoffman; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Roger was preceded in death by his mother, Edith, and father, Montell L. Morton. Friends may meet with the family from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel, where the Rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. Alan P. Jorgensen, Celebrant. Interment Blessed Sacrament Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church CCW Scholarship Fund. Roger cherished his family above all else. He considered himself the richest man in the world because of his "wonderful, wonderful wife," his "beautiful, beautiful children," his "grand, grand grandchildren," and his "great, great grandchildren."
