Runkel, Robert J., of Hopkins, died Thursday, May 19, 2011 at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans. Mr. Runkel was born April 8, 1926, in Hopkins, the son of Walter and Elsie (Thede) Runkel. Robert graduated from Hopkins High School in 1945. On December 5, 1947 Robert married Marilyn Sebright. He was a Veteran of the United States Army, having served during WWII. He farmed in Monterey Twp. for over 50 years, and worked for Kelvinator in Grand Rapids for 42 years. Surviving are his wife, Marilyn, 2 children; Steven and Linda Runkel of Grand Rapids, and Ann and David Krotz of North Carolina, 7 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, his daughter-in-law, Bonneta Runkel of Allegan, 1 sister, Arlene and Pete Snoeyink of Dewitt. He was preceded in death by his son, Brian Runkel, and his sister, Margaret DeVries. Friends may meet with the family on Monday, May 23, from 5-7 pm at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Hopkins Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 am at the Burnips Wesleyan Church, Pastors Steven Jones and William Osborne will officiate. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Otsego VFW Post 3030. Memorials may be made to the Wesleyan Church.
