Robert Joseph Wright, 87, of Weslaco, TX and formerly of Allegan, MI passed away Monday, September 9, 2024 at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco. Born November 16, 1936 in Grand Rapids, he was the son of the late Nick VanderWal and Mary Magdelene Crivello and was the husband of Margo (Wilcox) Wright. Robert had served in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1959. He then worked in the steel trades throughout his life. He spent thirty of those years at General Motors as a tow motor operator. While in the Allegan area, he volunteered as a Boy Scout Leader in Martin for twenty years. In his spare time, Robert enjoyed woodworking, fishing, hunting and gardening. He also loved birdwatching and had a special talent for being able to call birds and getting them to land right in his hand, much to the delight of the children.
In addition to Margo, his wife of sixty-four years, Robert is survived by his children, Mary Lou (Denis) Komornik, Patricia (Steven) Rufershafer, William (Kathy) Wright, Teresa (John) Plunkett and Steven Wright; brother, James B. Currey; grandchildren, Margeaux (Tyler) Latham and their daughter, Isabella Margaux, Andrew Komornik (fiancé Nicole Wyatt), Dawn Harris and her children, Evelyn and Zoey Harris, Derrick (Jessica) Wright and their children, Kinsley and Luka Wright, Devin (Whitney) Wright and their children, Brody, Landon and Isaiah Wright, Jordan Wright and daughter, Hazel, Trish (Oscar) Gonzales and their children, Blade, Tomas, Juan, Mateo and Izabella, Richard (Nichol) Holtz and their children, Taylor, Hunter and Skylar, Cameron Stratton and his children, Taylor, T.J. and Takaya, and Avery Stratton and daughter, Della; a great-great-granddaughter; many nieces and nephews; and an numerous extended family members and friends. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Kathy Benner.
The family will receive friends at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Monday, September 30, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM and Mass of Christian Burial will begin at the church at 11:00 AM. Robert will be laid to rest at the church cemetery following the mass. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Sacred Heart Church Stained Glass Fund, 1871 136th Avenue, Dorr, MI 49323.
