Obituary

Robert J. Hare Sr., Cheshire Twp., died Friday, March 26, 2004, at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI. A devoted family man, respected employer and generous friend, Bob was born March 6, 1937 in Kingsley, MI, the son of Harold & Laura (Sleight) Hare. After graduating from high school in Hepner, OR, Bob attended Michigan State University. He served in the United States Forest Service in Oregon for several years before settling in Otsego where he became a farmer, sheet metal expert and businessman. For the past 25 years, Bob owned and operated B&G Custom Works Inc., a company he founded in Otsego, now located in Allegan. B&G's 27 employees fabricate quality sheet metal products for customers in the United States and abroad. Active in his community, Bob was treasurer of the Eagle Lake Assoc. and a member of the Otsego Elks. He was also a long-time board member of Camp Kidwell 4-H camp on Eagle Lake near Allegan. He worked tirelessly to strengthen the camp's financial base, upgrade and expand its facilities and enhance the experiences of its many visitors. He would often take campers and staff on boat rides around Eagle Lake. Bob enjoyed many activities including fishing and hunting near his northern Michigan cabin, boating on Eagle Lake and playing golf at Cheshire Hills Golf Course. He traveled widely with family and friends throughout the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Egypt and Great Britain. Many things to many people, Bob will be remembered for sharing his time, his resources and his big heart with friends and family. Christmas Eve gatherings, pig roasts, family reunions, company picnics and pontoon boat rides around Eagle Lake were favorite times for him that he made into favorite times for others. Surviving are his beloved wife of 43 years, Gayle (Clark) Hare; 4 children, Kelly Hare & Joe Sherwood of Otsego, Lori Pickett of Plainwell, John & Laurie Hare of Otsego, and Jennifer & Todd Edson of Otsego; 11 grandchildren that he adored, Cody, Caitlin, Cassey, Melanie, Joshua, Shelby, Jessica, Whitney, Shane, Jamie and Ashley; 2 sisters, Martha & Stanley Holm of Oregon and Roberta & Calvin Covault of Allegan; 3 foster brothers, George, Fred & Robert Galloway and 1 foster sister, Sue Lovett; and several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and foster sister, Delores Galloway. Friends may meet with the family on Monday from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel, 528 Trowbridge, Allegan (www.gordenfuneral.com), where funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 pm. Pastor Dean Beckwith from Immanuel Lutheran Church will officiate. Interment will follow at Trowbridge Methodist Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Camp Kidwell, 229a Hubbard St., Allegan, MI, 49010
