Obituary

Portage, MI, died Thursday, July 4, 2002 at Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo. Mrs. Osmun was born Jan. 2, 1908 in Allegan, the daughter of Simon and Grace (Howe) Dykstra. She was valedictorian of Allegan High School Class of 1924 and was the state debate champ with her cousin, Garrett Dykstra. She graduated from Western MI Univ. where she was a speech major and a member of the Alpha Beta Epsilon Sorority and had taught school for a time in White Pigeon. She had served as a Grey Lady at Percy Jones Hospital in Battle Creek. She had been the Director of the Lansing and Jackson YWCA, Home Service Director for the American Red Cross, was a member of the MI Conference Board of Christian Education, and had traveled all over the world. Surviving are 2 children and their spouses, Joan and William Dalman of Plainwell and David and Joan Osmun of Portage; 5 grandchildren, Denise Dalman of Kalamazoo, Debra and Patrick Saavedra of Chile, Gregory and Jodi Osmun of Indiana, Scott Osmun of Dearborn and Alison Osmun of Portage. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer "Gene" in 1969 and a sister, Leta Shultz. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery, Allegan. Pastor Barry Lucas officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church, Allegan.
