of Allegan, died Friday, December 18, 2009 at the University Hospital in Ann Arbor. Mrs. Tooman was born November 27, 1937 in Watervliet, Michigan, the daughter of Horace and Madeline (Pharis) Horton. Nan was a member of the graduating Class of 1956 at Milan High School. She received her Bachelors Degree in Music from the University of Michigan in 1960. On September 3, 1960, Nan Horton married Les Tooman, in Milan, Michigan. Nan's life was centered around music, she taught piano for over 50 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, where she played music for many years, was past member and former President of the Allegan Music Club, member of the Kalamazoo Music Teachers Assoc., Life member of Michigan Music Teachers Assoc., and received the Teacher of the Year award. When she wasn't teaching she was playing and was an accompanist to many choral groups and soloist's. She also was a mentor for Kids Hope Program at Northward School in Allegan. Surviving are her husband, Les, 4 children, Eric and Jill Tooman of Allegan, Craig Tooman of New Jersey, Steve and Tracy Tooman of Ohio, and Leigh and Andy Letson of Zeeland, 6 grandchildren, Lauren, Dayton, Abbie, Connor, Adam J. and Nathan, her mother, Madeline Horton of Ann Arbor, 1 brother, James Horton and Rowena, 2 sisters, Suzanne and Carl VanAppledorn of Ann Arbor, Jeannine and Stephen Chapman of Interlochen, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Les and Nan also sponsored the Kao Tep family who reside in Allegan. Nan was preceded in death by her father, Horace. A Celebration of Life, will be held on Saturday, December 26, 2009, from 2-4 pm at the Silo, in Allegan. At the time of her death, Nan and her family gave the Gift of Life to many others that they may live.
