Obituary

Battle Creek, MI, died Wednesday, May 6, 2009. Mary was born March 1, 1917 in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Boss) Sikorskas. At the age of 7, she moved with her parents to Allegan. She graduated from Allegan High School in 1935. On Sept. 5, 1937, she married Edward Petroshus. They lived briefly in Kalamazoo before moving to Battle Creek in 1940. Mary worked in the production department of Kellogg Company for 36 years, retiring in 1982. She was a woman of many talents and varied interests. She took pride in her cooking, baking, handiwork, gardening and photography; and was a frequent visitor to the family cabin near Baldwin and the Leelanau Peninsula, where she enjoyed watching sunsets, walking the beaches and collecting Petoskey stones. She was an avid Lawrence Welk fan and enjoyed Polka Monday Afternoons in Manistee. Mary was a member of the St. Philip Catholic Church, the Kellogg 25 year Club, the Lithuania Heritage Club and L-Lakes Assoc. She lived her life for her family. Surviving are 2 daughters, Anita Hallas of Haslett and Mary Jo Petroshus of Battle Creek; grandson, Michael and granddaughter, Kelly; 2 sisters, Bernice Begeman of Kalamazoo and Helen Hitchcock of Allegan; numerous nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Genevieve Petroshus, and brother-in-law, Kenneth Smith, as well as many close friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by Edward, her husband of 57 years, in 1993, and 2 sons, Joseph and David. Friends may meet with the family from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel, where the rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. Allen P. Jorgensen, Celebrant. Interment Oakwood Cemetery, Allegan. Memorial contributions may be made to the Activity Fund at the Oaks at North Pointe Woods, 706 North Ave., Battle Creek, MI 49026 or to plant flowers in your garden as a reminder of Mary.
