Mary Lou Kennedy, 91, of Kalamazoo, MI passed away Saturday, December 8, 2018 at her home in Allegan. Born October 18, 1927 in Kalamazoo, she was the daughter of the late Clyde Kerlin Leonard and Beatrice Irene (Kellogg) Leonard. Mrs. Kennedy was the wife of the late Benjamin Richard Kennedy who preceded her in death in 1967 when she was just forty years old; leaving her to raise their four children on her own. She had worked as the Executive Secretary to the Director of Kalamazoo Regional Psychiatric Hospital Children's Unit and at Kalamazoo Public Schools. Mrs. Kennedy was a talented singer. As a child she and her sister would sing and dance in Washington Square where they were paid with actual peanuts. Later in life she joined her sister and husband singing in the group The Butlers. Together they performed forties style music at venues such as the Kalamazoo Moose Lodge and Club Hollywood. Mrs. Kennedy also enjoyed bowling and was a member of a bowling league for many years. She is survived by her children, William L. Kennedy, Teresa L. Kennedy, Betty A. Bronson and Lori E. Johnson; step-son, Richard L. Kennedy; six grandchildren, Chris Kennedy, Mary Kennedy, Don Kennedy, Ben Chapman, Kelly LaBar and Brianna Kennedy; and three great-grandchildren, Parker Kennedy, Ella Kennedy and Hudson Kennedy. Along with her parents and her husband, Mrs. Kennedy was preceded in death by two siblings, Gilbert Leonard and Betty Triest. The family will receive friends at Merson Church on Friday, December 14, 2018 from noon until 1:00 PM at which time a funeral service will begin. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Kalamazoo.
