Allegan, MI, died Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at the Allegan County Medical Care Facility. Mrs. Gorter was born Jan. 23, 1923 in Lundale, WV, the daughter of Everett and Clara (Roberts) Gant. She came to Michigan in 1940. She had been a hostess for the C & O Railroad in the 1950's and had also worked at Hattems Restaurant in Grand Rapids. Mary had been a volunteer at the snack bar at Allegan General Hospital many years ago. She had been employed at R.B. Huff's for a few years and had worked at the Allegan County Fair. She enjoyed flower gardening, bird watching, and word search puzzles. News and current events were important to Mary so she was a loyal CNN viewer. She took pride in her right to vote, and had already cast her ballot for the upcoming election. Surviving are 3 children, Nancy and Roger Smalla of Allegan, Al and Lois Brownell of Arizona and Rosemary Moose and Albert Dempsey of Arizona; 3 grandchildren, Liz and Gary Sulzener, Jodie and Todd Beardsley and Jason Brownell; 6 great-grandchildren; 4 nieces and nephews, Joan and Bob Simmons, Jerry and Darlene Gant, Georgiann Bloss, and George Gant, Jr. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hans, 1 brother and 2 sisters. There will be no visitation. Memorial services will be held Saturday, November 1, at 11:30 a.m. at the First Congregational Church. Pastor Barry Lucas officiating.
