Allegan, MI, died Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at her home. Mrs. Hyslop was born February 2, 1911 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Dr. Albert J. and Emily (Sieg) Prescott. The family soon moved to Old Mission, MI, where Martha grew up. She attended secretarial school in Chicago and returned to work at the State Hospital in Traverse City, where she met her future husband, Dr. William T. Hyslop. They were married in Old Mission in 1939 and made their home in Traverse City. In 1954, they moved to Saginaw with their four children, where Martha became active in local community organizations. Every summer, the family resided at The Pines, which was shared by a large, extended family and operated as a summer resort. Martha was widely known as a warm and charming hostess to all. In 1972, Martha and her husband retired to Old Mission. She was well-known and active in community affairs; a life-long member of the Old Mission Congregational Church and Ladies' Aid, and a member of the Old Mission Historical Society and Old Mission Women's Club. She was a dedicated naturalist and conservationist, and an early pioneer of preserving the scenic beauty of the Old Mission Peninsula. Surviving are 4 children, Robert S. Hyslop of Portland, OR, William A. Hyslop of Old Mission, John Morton (Michele) Hyslop of Allegan, and Mary (William) Jones of Allegan; 3 grandchildren, Brian W. Hyslop of Eugene, OR, Tracy A. Hyslop of Kalamazoo, and Erin M. (Nate) Fuller of Kalamazoo; as well as a large and loving extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William T. Hyslop in 1999. A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 29, at noon, at the Old Mission Congregational Church, with a luncheon to follow at the American Legion Hall in Old Mission. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice or the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation - Dougherty House Fund.
