Died Thursday, January 17, 2002 at Stanford Lodge, Plainwell. Peg was born November 17, 1911 in Allegan, MI the daughter of Hugh and Emma (Polk) Mac Dougall. She was raised in Allegan in a family with a rich historical tradition. Among the first ethnic groups to settle in the Martin area, around 1830, were the Highland Scots, which included the Mac Dougall family. Peg's father was the Allegan County Surveyor for many years and was succeeded by her husband, Don Allen. Peg fondly recalled her frequent visits as a child to her father's office in the old Allegan County Court House. She is the last known member of the Mac Dougall family in the area. Following her graduation from high school, Peg attended Agnes Scott College in Macon, Georgia. After obtaining her degree, she returned to Michigan and taught school in Lansing and then in Allegan. Among her numerous interests were teaching, reading and traveling; especially to Scotland and to North Carolina for annual Clan gatherings and Highland Games. She was also an avid bridge player. Although Peg did not have children of her own, she was a wonderful role model and fine mathematics teacher to hundreds of students who attended the Allegan Public Schools. These students were indeed her children and many came to visit her when she retired from teaching. Peg was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Allegan, Allegan Library Board, Allegan County Historical Society, Allegan History Class and the DAR. Peg resided in her family home near the Allegan County Building until about two years ago when she moved to Stanford Lodge in Plainwell. Among her many supportive friends toward the end of her life were Mark & Leigh Larson and Mike & Chris Ivester. Peg's husband, Don preceded her in death in 1963 and also a sister-in-law, Laura Smith, to whom she was devoted. Among her survivors are cousins, Charlene Saunders and Janet Crosby. Visitation will be held Tuesday 10:00 am until time of Service at 11:00 am at the First Presbyterian Church, Allegan. Pastor Joseph Phipps officiating. Interment Oakwood Cemetery, Allegan. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the Allegan County Historical Society. Arrangements by Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel.
