Allegan, MI, was called home to her Lord and waiting family early on Monday, October 6, 2008 at the age of 91. She died peacefully at Allegan County Medical Care Facility, which had been her new and loving home all summer, after a brief illness. Mrs. Ashley was born August 8, 1917 in Dalton, IL, the daughter of William and Clara (Peterson) Meiser. Since 1930, she was a lifelong Allegan resident and member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. She is remembered as a sweet and delightful woman of kind spirit and optimism, who devoted a good and happy life to husband, family, and community. She was a member of the local Lady Elks and the Catholic Church Mystical Rose Society. Her proudest accomplishments in her rich life were her many years of service as a nurse's aide at Allegan General Hospital. Upon her retirement, she enjoyed another decade of fun years as the local crossing guard on busy Marshall St. for the children at South Ward School, a career she shared with her husband, Joseph, who was the crossing guard for the North Ward kids. She always teased her family that these youngsters were the grandchildren in her life. Surviving are 2 children, Carol Ashley and Mark (Theresa) Ashley, all of Allegan; 2 sisters-in-law, June Meiser and Alice Meiser, both of Allegan; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 46 years, Joseph, and 3 brothers, Kenneth, William and Raymond Meiser. Friends may meet with the family from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel where the Rosary will be recited Wednesday at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. Alan P. Jorgensen, Celebrant. Interment Oakwood Cemetery, Allegan. Memorial contributions may be made to the Allegan Co. Medical Care Facility.
