Obituary

Lois Jane (Pickitt) Smith, a lifelong Allegan resident, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on October 3, 2026. Lois was born on October 28, 1932, to Harry and Ann Pickitt, the youngest of their four daughters.

She attended Allegan High School (1951), where she played girls basketball. Lois had a group of eleven other girls, who called themselves The Dirty Dozen. These women remained lifelong friends. After High School, she attended John Brown University, in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. Then, went on to Western Michigan University, where she studied Home Economics.

Lois moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for a short period of time. There, she met the love of her life, Bill Smith, on a blind date, during his duty with the Navy. They were married, on February 21, 1958, at the First Baptist Church of Allegan. Later, they were blessed with two children, Cassandra (Smith) Atkins and Wesley (Melanie) Smith.

Lois devoted her life to being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She spent several decades as Head of the First Baptist Church Nursery. Right up to her last day, she had no problem sharing her love of the Lord, and praying for others. She was a very selfless, compassionate woman, who put other’s needs above her own.

Lois loved to bake and cook. Every winter, Lois would look forward to the day she and Bill could leave and head to Florida. There, they would spend time with family and friends. They enjoyed the warm weather by taking walks on the beach together. She also spent countless hours laying in the sun.

Lois is survived by her children Cassandra (Cassie) Atkins and Wesley (Melanie) Smith; seven grandchildren, Savannah (Alan) Devine, Raven Ellicott, Liza (Joey) Rusan, Shanel (CJ) Nightingale, Deidre (Zachary) Radcliffe, Madelyn (Alex) Carter, and Hudson (Hannah) Smith; as well as her twelve great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bill, her parents; Harry and Ann, her sisters and their spouses; Wildarene (Chuck) Sheffer, Miriam (Boone) Cook, Reva (John) Miller.

Friends may visit with the family at Gorden Funeral Residence in Allegan, MI, 528 Trowbridge Street, on Sunday, October 11 from 2:00pm until 4:00pm.

A graveside service will follow, at Oakwood Cemetery, Western Ave/M40 North, Allegan. Light dinner will be provided at First Baptist Church of Allegan, afterwards.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Lois, may be directed to Wings of Hope Hospice of Allegan or Camp Beechpoint in Allegan.

“Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert.” Isaiah 35:5-6
