Allegan, MI, passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at the VA Facility in Battle Creek. Lewis was born March 18, 1920 in Howell, MI, the son of Robert and Veda Krause. He was a veteran of WWII, having served his country both in the Navy and the Army for 10 years. While stationed at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Baltimore, MD, Lew met and married Lizzie Mae Young, a student nurse at John Hopkins University, in 1947. After his honorable discharge from military service, Lewis attended the University of Maryland, and later MSU, where he graduated with honors with a Bachelors Degree in Agricultural Economics. Lew was employed by Farmers Home Administration as a Supervisor in the Allegan County office, where he made loans for the purchase of farms, machinery, livestock, and for the building and/or purchasing of residential homes. He retired from FHA after 28 years, and then was employed as a Maintenance Supervisor at Allegan General Hospital for 7 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Allegan, a Post Commander of the Oscar Briggs American Legion Post, a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, along with memberships in the NRA and the VFW Post #3030 in Otsego. He enjoyed deer and moose hunting with his friends, sons and grandsons. He also enjoyed golfing, snowmobiling and TV sports...especially MSU football. He loved traveling, especially to his many ship reunions, as he had served on 5 different ships while in the Navy. The most memorable trips were the ones he and Liz took to Germany to visit their daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren while the family was stationed in Ansbach, Germany with the Army. These visits were even more meaningful to Lew, as his great grandparents had come to the United States from East Prussia, which is now part of Germany. Lew was a very loving person who never hesitated to express his deep love to his family and help them in any way he could. Surviving are his wife, Liz Young Krause; 3 children and their spouses, Robert and Arlene Krause of Plainwell, Konrad and Terry Krause of Mattawan, and Karen and James Rix of Gun Lake; 9 grandchildren, Allen Krause, Stephen Krause, David Krause, Angela Krause, Jennifer (Matthew) Grote, Eric (Sarah) Krause, Joshua Rix, Daniel (Jamie) Rix and Matthew (Hannah) Rix.
