Allegan, MI - "You know," she'd say, "when someone is sick in here, well, I go pray with them." She would go on to add that often her fellow residents at the Allegan County Medical Care Community would pass away and sometimes, well, would you believe they got better? And on the evening of January 18, 2017, Kathryn Ann (Bolhuis) Lowman finally had the opportunity to get better after a long and hard-fought battle with dementia. It bears mentioning that this beloved prayer warrior of a sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother was surrounded by those she prayed for the most; her family. Kathryn was born on July 24, 1926 to Daniel and Anna Catherine Bolhuis of the Netherlands. She married James (John) Lowman in 1944 and together they raised four children. Surviving her are her children Kathy and Rev. Larry Goodrich of Arlington, TX, David and Cindy Lowman of Hopkins, MI, Frankie and Mitch Marcell of St. Paul, MN and her daughter-in-law Cheryl Lowman of E. Lansing, MI. But as I'm sure we all know, her 10 grandchildren, 18.33 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren were her favorites. She is also survived by a brother, Enno, of Boise, ID who made the long trip to see Kathryn just a few short months ago. Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. James John; a son, Rev. James J.; her parents, Daniel and Anna Catherine; her brothers, Lawrence, Harm, Henry, John and Sabo; and her sisters Anna, Trina, Fredrica, Gertrude and Grace. Kathryn was a mother, a gracious pastor's wife and beloved Sunday school teacher for the best years of her life serving at a number of churches throughout Michigan. Kathryn was ridiculously skilled at garage-saling and baking pineapple upside-down cakes, but less so at driving. The immediate family will gather for a service Friday afternoon, January 20 at 3:30 PM at the Miner Cemetery in Watson Township, MI. A celebration of Kathryn's life will be scheduled at a later date. The family's mission is to make disciples and so in lieu of flowers, they've asked for any gifts to be donated to Kathryn's granddaughter Lydia's upcoming missions work in Thailand. The family also wishes to specifically acknowledge the staff at the Perrigo Memory Care Center at ACMCC for the incredible care and love shown to Kathryn during her stay there. The truth is that there are angels walking among us, and several of them happen to work there. Kathryn's favorite verse is Proverbs 31:10 - "Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies."
