Obituary

Karl M. Ferris Jr., age 74, of Cheshire Township, passed away Thursday, July 7, 2016 at his home. Mr. Ferris was born May 8, 1942 in Allegan, Michigan, the son of the late Karl and Sara (Hammer) Ferris. Karl married Jeanette (Earle) Hampton on July 12, 1980, celebrating just shy of 36 years of married life together. He enjoyed their family time and was very proud of each of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Karl loved the outdoors and spending time camping, golfing, fishing and hunting. During basketball season, one would find Karl watching and cheering on his favorite team, Hope College. He also enjoyed playing a great game of pool. Together, Karl and Jeanette enjoyed spending their winters in Arizona, soaking up the sunshine instead of the cold Michigan weather. Karl was a heavy equipment operator and a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 324, retiring in 1998 after working over 40 years in the field. During his career, he worked for Pickett Schreur, Wyoming Asphalt, Reith and Riley, Milbocker and Sons, Inc., and Peters Construction from which he retired. Karl is survived by his loving wife, Jeanette; their children: Amy and Will Zeran, Karl III and Sherri Ferris, Kim and Paul Bloss, Shelly and Scott Jirgens, and Eric Hampton; 15 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters: Ilene Akerly, Virginia Leins, and Winifred Miller: and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his great-grandson, Nathan and sister, Florence Morris. A graveside service will be held at Lindsley Cemetery (corner of 104th Ave. and 41st St., Allegan, MI 49010) on Monday, July 18 at 11:00 AM, Pastor Bert Baker officiating. A Remembrance Luncheon will be held at the Cheshire Golf Course, located at 3829 102nd Ave., Allegan, MI 49010, immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Karl's name to the Saint Mary's Foundation to assist the Hauenstein Neuroscience Center in their research on essential tremors and the American Heart Association. Interment at Lindsley Cemetery, Cheshire Township.
