of Portage, formerly of Allegan, died Friday, December 19, 2008 at Kairos Dwelling in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Maly was born November 30, 1917, in Allegan, the daughter of Stevan and Agnes (Donat) Herpst. On November 7, 1942 in Chicago, Julia married Joseph Maly, who preceded her in death in 1987. Julia was a member of Pine Island Presbyterian Church in Kalamazoo. She loved to cook and bake, she decorated and baked all the family birthday, wedding and anniversary cakes, for family and friends, and enjoyed making holiday cookies. She was also an expert at ironing, and could always repair a tear, or replace a zipper. Julia resided in Allegan most of her life, she moved to the Portage area in 1985, and lived the last 2 years in Director's Hall. Surviving are her 3 children, James and Hazel Maly of IL, Ray and Carolyn Maly of Hickory Corners and Debra Maly of Portage; 7 grandchildren, Blake and Kris Maly, Brent Maly, Brooke and Andy Green, Brett Bellingar, Bennett Bellingar, Janet and Abe Kreml, Sheila Herbert; 11 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson and 1 step great-granddaughter; 1 brother, George Herpst of Allegan; several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by 1 brother and 2 sisters. Friends may meet with the family on Saturday, December 27, 2008 at 12 noon until service time at 1 p.m. at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel. Private interment will take place in Lindsley Cemetery, Cheshire Twp., Michigan. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Kairos Dwelling, 2945 Gull Rd., Kalamazoo, MI.
