Obituary

DAVID, Dr. John Alan (Jack), 83, a practicing optometrist in the town of Allegan for more than 50 years, died on Nov. 4, 2007, in Green Valley, AZ. Jack was born in Lapeer May 24, 1924. He attended University of Missouri but left to join the Army when Pearl Harbor was bombed. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Pacific for 33 months. He was a decorated soldier with a Commendation for Services while acting as a litter-bearer in the evacuation of the wounded in Cebu, Philippines. Returning home, Jack attended Ferris Institute, where he met his wife, Beverly (Penny) Sutley. They were married and moved to Chicago where he attended Northern Illinois College of Optometry on the G.I. Bill. With his degree in hand, the family moved to Allegan where Jack set up his office in the old Franz Building, joining such professionals as attorney Garth Andrews, pharmacist Lloyd Lawson and physician Peter Brachman. Bringing up a family of three children, restoring the house at 237 Marshall St. to its original Victorian splendor, golf at the old Otwellegan Country Club, philosophical luncheon discussions at the Longbranch, coffee breaks at The Grill - all these were the fabric of Jack's life in the small town of Allegan. Jack was a life-long Rotarian and member of the Elks. Glenn, on Lake Michigan, became a second home where summers were spent sailing his sloop, the Delilah, golfing at the nearby courses and entertaining family and friends. After retirement, Jack and Penny moved to Green Valley, AZ, where they could spend the six winter months surrounded by mountains and golf courses. They returned to Glenn in the summer to enjoy the sunsets on Lake Michigan with relatives and neighbors. Along with his wife, he is survived by a son, James and daughter-in-law Cheryl; a daughter, Denise Marie Hoag; a daughter-in-law, Joan David-whose son John died in 1981-and her husband, Douglas Jacobson; Dr. and Mrs. Wishwa Nath Kapoor; nine grandchildren, Ann, Tim, Amber, Dustin, Zachary, Sarah, Nicholas, Sitara and Daveed; and two great-grandchildren, James Avery Colman and Jackson David. "And we did all the pleasures prove." Memorial graveside services will be held Friday, Nov. 16, 2007 at 1 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Cemetery. Rev. Fr. Alan P. Jorgensen, Celebrant. Local arrangements by the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel. 1.
