Obituary

of Allegan, died Saturday, August 7, 2010, racing his drag boat in Oklahoma. John was born October 27, 1954 in Allegan, Michigan, the son of Eugene and Rose (Pionke) Haas. John graduated from Allegan High School in 1972, and was a member of South Monterey United Methodist Church. For over 21 years he worked for Tru Heat in Allegan, where he retired in 2009. John was inducted into the Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Fame. He has been racing professionally since 1989 in the drag boat circuit, but lake raced since '78. John currently holds the Top Fuel World Record and is a 4 time World Champion. Surviving are his wife Deanna, 2 children; John and Jennifer Haas, and Joe Haas, all of Allegan, 1 granddaughter, Kaylee, his mother, Rose Haas, 1 brother, Tom Haas and Elaine Lavin of Allegan, 2 sisters; Nancy and Kenny Vogt of Allegan, Brenda and Pete Majdan of Otsego, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Gene Haas, his sister, Linda Fleming ,and father-in-law, Walter Creech. Friends may meet with the family on Wednesday from 5 to 8 pm at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel. A memorial service celebrating John's life will be held at his home on Miner Lake, Saturday, September 11, from 2-5 pm. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Racers for Christ, P.O.Box 1208 Gilbert, AZ 85299 or RESP, Racers Emergency Support Program.
