Obituary

ANDERSON, Jeanette S. of Allegan, Michigan, died Saturday, January 15, 2005 at the Allegan General Hospital. Mrs. Anderson was born September 14, 1921 and raised in Springfield, IL, the daughter of Wilbur and Myrtle (Woodford) Smith. As a child, she traveled the states with her family, selling law books, which began her life-long love of travel and books. She graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in English, where she had been a member of the Pi Phi Sorority, and also where she later earned her Master's degree in Comparative Literature. She taught English at the University of Illinois at Champaign and later at Chatham Glenwood High School in Chatham, IL, for ten years. She was united in marriage to Owen A. Anderson, Sr., in 1945, and he preceded her in death in 1996. She raised their family in Quincy, IL and Springfield, IL. She had an active life enjoying swimming, skiing, her children and grandchildren, and her dog, Dutchess. She moved to Allegan, MI, in 2002 to be near her son Chris, and his family, and volunteered at West Ward Elementary School in Allegan. She rang in 2005 with fireworks and champagne. She will be missed by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends. Surviving are 4 children and their spouses, Owen and Karen Anderson, Jr. of Springfield, IL, Diane and Michael Murphy of Golconda, IL, Christopher and Patricia Anderson of Allegan, MI, and Randolph and Rose Anderson of Stanwood, WA; 7 grandchildren, Heather, Mark, Ashley, Katie, Joey, Bailey, and Ben; 4 great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by 1 brother and 1 sister. Memorial services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Allegan United Methodist Church. Pastor Joseph Spackman officiating. Contributions may be made to West Ward Elementary School Library. Arrangements by the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel.
