Obituary

of Allegan, died Monday, July 11, 2011 at the Bronson Methodist Hospital. Mr. Holland was born March 3, 1931, in Allegan, the son of James and Lydia (Arndt) Holland. Jim graduated from Allegan High School in 1949, and was a Veteran of the United States Navy, serving from 1950 to 1954. He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree from Western Michigan University in 1960 and completed postgraduate courses at Michigan State University. He was a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Allegan. He was the industrial arts teacher at Hopkins High School from 1962- 1972, as well as the Hopkins A.D., assistant football coach and jv basketball coach. From 1972 - 1988 Jim was employed by Holland and Allegan Public Schools working as the Vocational Education Coordinator. Jim had a passion for restoring antique cars, and was a member of many car clubs. Jim enjoyed many forms of music including bluegrass, jazz, and Dixieland; entertaining local groups with his banjo. Surviving are his wife, Marie, 4 children; Jim and Patty Holland of Allegan, Liz and Mike Jones of Plainwell, Carolyn and Tom Blake of Gobles, and Becky and Dan Miner of Hudsonville, 11 grandchildren, 2 brothers-in-law, Bill Waterman of Allegan, Leon Ostrander of Ann Arbor, 2 sisters-in-law, Dorothy Rozeboom of FL, and Margaret Winchester of Gulliver, MI. several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brother, Dick and his sister, Jackie Waterman. Friends may meet with the family on Friday, July 15, from 6-8pm at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 12 noon at the First Presbyterian Church in Allegan. Pastor Karen Fitz LaBarge will officiate. Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Church or Allegan Dollars for Scholars.
