Heath Twp., Allegan, MI, passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at Bronson Methodist Hospital. He was born August 31, 1931 in Louisa, KY, the son of Albert and Hilda (McIntire) Cyrus. His family followed the 1930's oil boom to Michigan and settled in Allegan. He attended Allegan schools, graduating from Allegan High School in 1949. He served his country in the Korean War with the U.S. Air Force. After attending barber school in Flint, he opened his salon, Jim's, on Hubbard St. in Allegan. He was an icon there for thirty-eight years. He spent many lunch hours at the Longbranch Saloon, sharing stories with the local lawyers, judges and businessmen. Many truths and untruths were told around the table. Upon retirement, he used his ingenuity to build a sawmill from scratch. He used this sawmill to cut logs that he felled, debarked, sawed, dried, and build a large A-frame "cabin in the woods" on Bear Creek. This project took him years. Every inch of the home was lovingly hand done by Jim. On July 28, 1984, he married the former Nancy Brenner and she survives. Together they have enjoyed 22 years of marriage. He was a caring, loving husband. Together they shared a love of travel, black powder camping - he was one of the founding members of the Wolverine State Primitive Rendezvous, riding his Indian motorcycle, refurbishing their River Queen houseboat and visiting with family and friends. Jim loved history and was glad to relate stories about his family, which was traced by his mother to the 17th century. He is survived by his three children, James T. Cyrus, Karen Cyrus, and Morgan Cyrus. He is also survived by two sisters, Anna and Laura. His in-laws survive him, Chester and Evelyn Brenner, along with sister-in-law, Janet (Chuck) Dell and brother-in-law, Tom (Kathy) Brenner. His nieces and nephews, Jamie (Terry) Scott, and April, Nate, and Lee Brenner, and many cousins in Allegan, Kentucky and West Virginia, will miss him dearly. His booming laugh, loving bear hugs, unique character and friendly smile will be missed by all. Friends may meet with the family from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Allegan Area Community Center. Pastor Barry Lucas officiating. Interment Hudson Corners Cemetery, Allegan Twp. Contributions in memory of Jim may be made to Dollars for Scholars.
