Obituary

Harry E. Smith, Jr., "Smitty" to many, 91, passed away on September 15, 2021. Harry was born on March 6, 1930, in Lugerville, Wisconsin, the "baby" of four siblings. He was raised in Nahma, Michigan and very proud of having attended the one room schoolhouse in Nahma, returning to the class reunion as often as possible. After working at the Grand Hotel, Mackinaw Island, Michigan, Harry enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. His military service led to his lifelong support of the VFW, American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans. Harry could often be seen wearing his jaunty hat and careening through Allegan County backroads with his dog Sammy. Known to love his wife June's cooking he also had a passion for fried fish dinner at "Vicki's" and was known for his ever-ready bad jokes and one liners. He had a friend around every corner and loved all things Allegan. Harry was especially devoted to Valley Township where his service to the community benefited many. He was honored to have served on the Valley Township board for 40 years and while on the board he initiated the annual Township "Clean-up" event. Harry also served the Allegan County community for several years as a diligent advocate for children. For decades Harry and June were small business owner/operators of Onward North, a stamped wrench manufacturing company which they purchased from June's parents. Prior to that, Harry proudly served for a brief time as Sheriff of Allegan County, as a detective in Otsego, and he worked for a few years in security at Western Michigan University. Although his work in law enforcement was not of long duration, he enjoyed sharing many "back-in-the-day" stories of an especially crime filled time and he relished his time serving the community in that capacity. Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Harry E. Smith, Sr. and Julia Kuchinski Smith; siblings, Fern Lebrasseur, Robert (Bud) Smith, and Jane (Betty) Smith; and nephew, Jerry Abbate. He is survived by his wife, June (Reed) A. Smith; his daughter, Kathleen Hainer; his step-children, Nancy L. Beebe and John J. Lomen; and grandchildren, S. Brooke Briggance, J. L. Mokma (Amy Cibula), Mark C. (Jenny) Spohn, Patrick A. (Erin) Spohn, Geoffery R. (M.T.) Spohn and Timothy J. (Jessica) Davidsmeyer; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
