Gladys Elizabeth Nordquist Schulz was born in Chicago, IL on July 22, 1929, to George and Esther Nordquist, who had both immigrated from Sweden at 18 and 14 years of age respectively. Along with her parents and her twin brothers, they moved to Allegan to the Cheshire area when she was a year old. Gladys went to the Moon School for eight years and then went on to Allegan High School and graduated in 1946. She met her husband at a dance and they were married on August 14th, 1948, celebrating their 50th anniversary in 1998. To this union two sons were born, Andrew (Susanna) and Stephen (Cheri); six granddaughters, Sarah Schulz, Emily (Ty) Gasper, Shelby (Matthew) Finney, Hannah (Reid) Dugan, Lisa (Brooks) McKinley, Diana (Richard) Lopez; and five great-grandchildren, Adam, Sophia, Winny, Colton, and Ava. Gladys also treasured her fun times and dear friendship with Shirley Ivester. Deceased, along with her parents and her husband, Andrew H., are her brothers, Clarence (Doris) Nordquist and George (Eloise) Nordquist.
Gladys retired from the telephone company in 1989 after 30 years of service. She went on to spend much of her time with granddaughters Hannah and Shelby, teaching them everything they know about card games and fishing. The three of them spent endless hours together going on golf cart adventures around the farm to hunt for morel mushrooms or black raspberries. She enjoyed going to their sporting events so much that she never missed one game whether it was in town or out of town, in the sunshine or in the snow. Throughout their childhood, she hosted several dress up tea parties for Hannah and Shelby and their friends, always letting them use the special dishes. According to the girls, she will forever hold the record for making the best buttered toast and milkshakes in the family. Hannah and Shelby will forever hold dear all the goofy stories, warm memories, and inside jokes they shared with their Grandma. Meanwhile, the clock keeps ticking.
A private family service will take place on the farm. Memorial contributions can be made to the Wings Home, 330 Linn St., Allegan, MI 49010.
