Obituary

Gerrit Joostberns, Jr., 73 of Grand Junction, passed away Wednesday, January 27, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family. Born May 1, 1947 in Allegan, Michigan, he was the son of the late Gerrit and Florence (Jaarda) Joostberns, Sr., and the husband of the late Caroline Marie (Ellis) Joostberns. Gerrit proudly served in the United States Army earning the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. He went on to become a journeyman electrician and was a member of the United Auto Workers Union, Local 1502, for 30 years. When Gerrit wasn't working, you would find him tinkering with things around the house, fixing boats and motors and anything else he could find. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and just being outside, but also had a great time playing video poker at Harrahs's Casino in Las Vegas. One of his greatest pleasures came from taking part in the Farting Contest held in Nashville, Michigan! Needless to say, he enjoyed giving a blow-by-blow description of the contest! One thing Gerrit did take seriously in his life was the love he had for his children and grandchildren. He adored them and loved spending time with all them. Those left to cherish Gerrit's memory are his children, Denelle (Bob) Ellis, Teresa Pountain, Lauri Joostberns and Gerrit Joostberns III; fourteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and his brother, Ed (Mary) Joostberns. Along with his parents, Gerrit and Florence; and his wife of 49 years, Caroline; he was preceded in death by his two grandchildren, Chloe and Lilly Pountain; and siblings, Tom Joostberns, Paul Joostberns, Shirley Kaylor, Donna Kaylor, Pearl Hunsburger and Char Eberhard. The family will receive friends at Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel, on Saturday, January 30, 2021 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, at which time the funeral service will begin at 1:00 PM. The service will continue at Lindsley Cemetery where military honors will be given by the Otsego VFW Post 3030 and the active military. The family asks that you keep Mr. Joostberns legacy alive by passing on a kind gesture to someone in need. Service Details.
