Obituary

Gary Sherman Way was born to Sherman Ward and Esther Irma (Vonsee) Way on February 10, 1938. He arrived in his heavenly home December 27, 2008. Present with his Lord and Savior he loved so much. Gary was saved at the age of 23 in Fairfield, Illinois. He had a great desire to study God's word and in return share it with others. Gary began teaching adults as a young Christian and taught in churches in Illinois, Wyoming, Alaska and California, and for the last 29 years, at First Baptist Church of Allegan. He also served as deacon and trustee in Wyoming, Alaska, California and Michigan. He loved serving his Lord and his life showed it. .Gary graduated from Gerrish Higgins High School in Roscommon, MI in 1956. He attended the University of Oklahoma graduating in January 1961, with a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering. He was Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Tau, Pi Epsilon Tau honorary engineering societies and a member of St. Pat Council and LKOT. Gary determined he wanted to be the best engineer he could be. He loved a challenging project and applied his keen mind to it. He worked for Texaco, Pure Oil Co., Union Oil Co., and Miller Brothers Oil Co. He had his own petroleum consulting business for many years. Two years ago, he along with Steve Colquhoun and Jim Watson, formed Terrabyte with the goal of revitalizing old oil fields. Gary was excited about this new venture and greatly appreciated and loved the men he worked with. His work gave him great pleasure and he never lost his love for the "oil patch". One of Gary's joys in the last few years was having coffee with his friends at the Hubbard Street Restaurant and Minnie Sophrona's. He met many new friends and enjoyed many discussions about life with them. While attending O.U., he met his wife, Mary Elizabeth (Evans) and they were married Dec. 18, 1960, enjoying 48 wonderful years together. They were blessed with two children, Melissa Sue (Mike) Basler of Ludington and Matthew Sherman of Allegan. He loved his grandchildren dearly and considered them the blessings of his "old age"; Zachary, Breanna, and Nathan Basler. They truly were his joy and he loved doing anything with them. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, brother, Jack Way of Higgins Lake, MI; nieces, nephews, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Timothy Basler, sister, Dorothy Bennett and sister-in-law, Tina Way. Friends may meet with the family from 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, until time of memorial services at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at the First Baptist Church, Allegan. Pastors Greg Carlson and Raymond Mayhew officiating. Interment at a later date at Hudson Corners Cemetery, Allegan Twp. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church or Zion's Hope. Arrangements by the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel.
