age 90, of Allegan, passed away on Thursday, September 11, 2014 in Allegan. He was born in Scottville, Michigan on June 5, 1924, the son of Oscar William and LaVerna Mae (Thiel) Nelson. He married Jean Elizabeth Perret on April 21, 1946. They were married 62 years before Jean passed away in 2008. Fred is survived by two children: Carol (Joe) Wuis, Fred (JoDee) Nelson; his eight grandchildren: Renee (Jeff) Fonnet, Rinda (Ron) Wahmhoff, John Wuis, Jennifer (Ryan) Foster, Sarah (Pete) Gaza, Emily (Michael) Pope, Aaron Bell, Amy Bell; his eight great-grandchildren: Joshua and Zoe Fonnet, Evan and William Wahmhoff, Hunter Blake, Savannah and Spencer Foster, Emily Gaza; his sister Helen (Warren) Peterson; his brothers: Roger (Dede) Nelson, Morris (Loretta) Nelson; as well as good friend Evelyn Byron. Fred was vice president of his graduating class in Ludington in 1942. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army. He was awarded the Medal of Good Conduct and also Expert Marksman Award. Fred came to Allegan in 1947 and was the manager of Kroger before becoming the manager of Hardings Market. He retired 25 years later at the age of 50. Fred was involved with the community in many different ways. He was a Deacon in the Presbyterian Church where he also served as superintendent of Sunday School. President of the Lions Club from 1963-64. He was elected District Chief of the Wakazoo District of the Grand Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America in 1964. Fred was an instrument rated private pilot, having flown as far away as Mexico. He also loved all types of hunting and fishing. At the age of 87, while hunting with his son in Texas, he shot an eight point buck. Friends may visit with the family on Monday, September 15, 2014 from 1-3:00 P.M. at Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel. The Funeral will be held on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. also at Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel. Pastor Paul Hays will be officiating. Interment is at Oakwood Cemetery, Allegan.
