Obituary

Frank "Lex" Alexander Hummel Jr, 72, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, April 30, 2021, surrounded by family after a hard fought battle with cancer. He was born November 1, 1948, in Somerville, N.J. He attended high school at Blair Academy in Blairstown, NJ and received a BS degree from Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY. He met and married the love of his life, Sally, during college. They were married in 1969 at the ages of 19 and 20 and went on to have four children and ten grandchildren after 52 loving years of marriage. Lex entered the U.S. Army after graduating from college. He belonged to the 1st Cavalry Division stationed in Schwabach, Germany, and later to the 1st Armored Division at Fort Hood, TX. After the Army, Lex and his young family returned to New Jersey where he started his career in warehousing and distribution which eventually took him to Illinois. The family settled in the midwest where Lex was fortunate to retire in 2014. Lex and Sally's dream from the time they were married was to someday own a home on a lake. They purchased their dream home in Michigan on Duck Lake in Cheshire Township in 1999. Their fondest memories were of family and friends coming to celebrate on and near the water. Lex treasured his family above all. He loved golfing, billiards, camping, vegetable gardening and driving "Possibility Pontoon". He lived many adventures including turning a barn/silo into his home and camping in a retro-fitted ice cream truck. He was a man ahead of his time as an electric car enthusiast and founding member of an electric car club in 1980. He built his own electric car from an old VW bug. Forged at a young age tinkering in the woods at his grandfather's acreage, Lex had a unique mechanical mind that lent itself to fixing and solving problems. With this skill set, and his compassionate spirit, Lex enjoyed giving his time without fanfare. Lex was a tall, gentle, man with a warm presence. Lex cherished campfires under the stars listening to music and reminiscing with family. Always seated next to his wife, holding hands, Lex would quietly smile on Sally with love. Lex is survived by his wife, Sally (Feyler), daughter Christy (Scott Tisdall), sons, Frank III "Trip" (Kara), Pete (Dawn), Phil (Molly), mother Patricia, brother Karl and ten grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Sr. Friends may meet with the family on Friday, May 14, 2021 from 9am-11am at Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel. There will be a private funeral service later the same day at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Allegan, MI.
