Obituary

HOFFMAN, Florence Hunt a resident of Allegan since 1927, died Thursday, April 18, 2002 at the Allegan County Medical Care Facility. She was married to Carl Edward Hoffman of Allegan until his death in 1977. Active in the community for many years, Mrs. Hoffman taught English and social studies in the Allegan Public Schools and retired in 1970 as the librarian in Allegan Junior High. Known for her keen interest in music and talent at the piano, she was a devoted choir member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd for over fifty years. She was active in the Allegan Music Study Club and served as a piano accompanist for many school activities until her retirement. Mrs. Hoffman was a long-time member of the Allegan History Club and Daughters of the American Revolution. She traced her family back through her ancestors who arrived in this country from England in 1742. She was born Florence Eleanor Hunt in Kalamazoo, on Election Day, November 6, 1906 during the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 1927 and earned a master degree in education from there in 1947. She also earned a master degree in library science from Western Michigan University in 1956. Remembered for her intelligence, sense of humor and kindness, Mrs. Hoffman was the beloved mother of three children, Sam Hoffman and his wife, Doris, of Glenn, Evelyn Keck of Allegan and Sarah Allison and her husband, Douglas, of Bloomfield Hills. Seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren who live in Italy, Georgia, Maryland, Virginia and Washington also survive Mrs. Hoffman. There will be no visitation. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Allegan. Rev. LaRae Rutenbar officiating. Interment Oakwood Cemetery, Allegan. Memorial contributions may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. Arrangements by the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel.
