of Allegan. Passed away February 11, 2012 at the Wings Home in Allegan. She was born September 19, 1919, the daughter of the late LaVerne A. and Irene E. (Begole) Ball. She was married to Robert Gavan in 1941; he preceded her in death. Eunice was a Head Start Program teacher for 13 years in both Allegan and Mason Counties. She retired in 1980. Eunice loved art, especially painting. Best known for her scenic water color paintings, her works included Ludington, Michigan's shores, woodland, inland lakes, Arizona mountains and deserts, and her favorite locations around Allegan. Her last and unfinished work is a winter view of the Allegan riverfront. It was a special day for her and her family, when her life long work was recognized on her 90th birthday by the Allegan Area Arts Council with an art show and exhibit that also included her oil paintings, wood block prints, and sculpture. Eunice began her art training at 18, winning a Westinghouse 4-H Club scholarship to Michigan State University. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Surviving are seven children, Kathleen Van Almen of Allegan, Michael Gavan of Allegan, Shawn (Marge) Gavan of Allegan, Dennis (Sheila) Gavan of Kalamazoo, John (Sherry) Gavan of Interlocken, Roger (Rebecca Bodnar) Gavan of Allegan and Marie (John) Ryckman of Allegan; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Eunice was preceded in death by a son, Robert Gavan; a daughter, Carole Gavan; two grandchildren, Darin Gavan and Bojo Bell; a son-in-law, Jeff Van Almen; a daughter-in-law, Anna Mae Gavan; and a brother, Arthur Ball. Memorial Mass will take place 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 20, 2012 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. Alan P. Jorgensen will officiate. Interment of ashes will take place at a later date in Ludington. Memorials may be made to the Wings Home in Allegan or the Allegan District Library.
