Eugene Garle Wood, Jr., 68 of Allegan, Michigan, passed away Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at Ascension Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Born June 11, 1952 in Lynchburg, Virginia, but raised in Jensen Beach, Florida, he was the son of the late Eugene and Mannie (Tibbs) Wood and the husband of Wende (Duryea) Wood. Eugene, known to many as Gene, was a man of adventure and liked to try different things. He was a finish carpenter by trade, but his hobbies included surfing, and even tried scuba diving and skydiving, none of which are for the faint of heart. Some may even call it thrill-seeking. One new thing that Gene tried paid off very well for him - ballroom dancing. He decided that he needed to gain a little finesse in his life, so he tried ballroom dancing and ended up marrying the teacher! Together they raised their daughters and filled their lives with lots of love and many new adventures. Gene continued in his woodworking and built beautiful furnishings for their home. He and Wende enjoyed rock hunting along Lake Michigan beaches and Gene was able to catch his last sunset with Wende this past spring. As much fun as Gene had with his bride, being a super nanny to his grandsons the last four years ended up being his favorite activity. He was also anxiously awaiting the arrival of his first granddaughter that he was looking forward to spoiling. Though life was too short, much love, laughter and blessed memories were packed into it. Gene is survived by his wife of 34 years, Wende; two daughters, Amanda (Joshua) Blom and Samantha (Anthony) Fontanez; three grandsons, Finnley, Memphis and Oliver; one granddaughter-to-be, Vivian; one sister, Barbara Chase; and his in-laws, Jacque (Jimmy) James, Doug (Sandra) Duryea and LuAnn Cooke; and many, many nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers-in-law, John Chase and Tom Cooke. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held on June 12, 2021 at 11:00 AM at the Allegan United Methodist Church.
