Allegan, lost her seven year battle with Alzheimer's, September 29, 2007, at the Allegan Co. Medical Care Facility. Mrs. Wedge was born September 18, 1914 in Hopkins, the daughter of Royal and Bertha (Moored) Duryea. After her marriage to Pete Bender in 1935, she spent the rest of her life in Allegan, except for frequent trips to Florida to visit family. With Pete, she owned the Allegan Dairy for years and worked in the soda fountain and ice cream shop, developing a great appreciation of ice cream. She was a long time member of the United Methodist Church in Allegan, where she sang in the choir and belonged to many women's groups. She loved music and playing the piano and organ and was able to be a substitute pianist/organist for some of the local churches. As a young girl, she accompanied her father and his quartet and later in her life, she played for her son at different occasions. She had been employed as a sales clerk in Allegan for Hiatt's and J.C. Penney Department stores, from where she retired. Surviving are 5 children, Jim and Charlene Bender of Allegan, Judy Bray of Seminole, FL, Mike and Sandy Bender of Allegan, Tom and Pam Bender of Seminole, FL and Bill and Cathy Bender of Allegan; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Earl "Pete" Bender in 1973 and her second husband, Melvin Wedge, in 2006, grandson, Jim Bender, 2 brothers, Keith and Ralph Duryea, and 3 sisters, Ethelyn Banks, Lois Gordon, and Crescent Bazaan. Friends may meet with the family from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel, where funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. Pastor Robert Stover officiating. Interment Oakwood Cemetery, Allegan. Memorial contributions may be made to the Allegan Co. Medical Care Facility.
