Obituary

E. Marie (Rozeboom) Holland, of Allegan, passed away peacefully at home on June 27, 2026, with loving family by her side, and entered the Kingdom of Heaven and reunited with her beloved husband, James C. Holland, nearly 15 years after his death.

Marie was born on October 13, 1931, to Joseph and Minewell Rozeboom, the youngest of six children, all of whom predeceased her: Louise (Leon) Ostrander; Joseph (Anne) Rozeboom; James (Dorothy) Rozeboom; Kathryn (Clayton) Wilson (Nieces Kathy Sheldon and Mary Gooze); and Margaret (Thomas) Winchester. She was predeceased by her in-laws: Richard (Jeanne) Holland; and Jacqueline (William) Waterman (Niece Regina Burroughs). She also untimely lost two dear family members: Son-in-law Thomas Blake and great granddaughter Kathleen Grigsby.

Marie was an Allegan High School graduate, a member of the Class of 1949, a small group of whom still gather monthly. She went on to Western Michigan University and received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education. She was a staunch believer in education and made sure her children and grandchildren set off on a lifelong education adventure. She began her teaching career at Portland, followed by Hopkins High School, where she taught typing, shorthand, and business classes, retiring after 25-plus years in education.

On June 18, 1955, Marie married the love of her life, Jim, (also Class of ‘49), and together they started their 56-year marital journey in Portland, Kalamazoo, and then moved to Allegan and settled on what is affectionately known in the family as “The Farm,” the homestead where Marie spent her childhood. It’s there where they worked in not only their respective career fields, but farmed the rolling fields, tended to livestock, lived simply, and nurtured their family of four: James (Patricia) Holland; Elizabeth (Michael) Jones; Carolyn Blake; and Rebecca (Daniel) Miner. When all the hard work was done, Jim and Marie traded in the farm life for a peaceful lake life and lived out their retirement years enjoying family, friends, and hobbies, some of which for Marie included gardening, creating, and good ol’ department store shopping. Her favorite hobby was sewing, especially making real wool blankets, and every member of the family has been blessed with a blanket (or two) made with her talented and loving hands.

Marie was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Allegan, the same church attended by her parents, serving as a Deacon, Elder, Treasurer, and overseeing hospitality and seasonal decorations with her creative talents. She was also involved with the Allegan Public Library as part of the Friends of the Library group. And since Jim was an avid antique car buff, he and Marie were involved with the KAARC, so many a weekend they could be found traveling about Michigan attending car shows and unselfishly volunteering their time.

Marie also unselfishly gave of her time to her cherished family. She was always approachable and ready to lend an ear, slip in some sound advice, and help you solve your problems. She was the consummate hostess, always welcoming, saying “come anytime,” and constantly checked the calendar to see when and where the next family gathering or celebration would be. Her grandchildren made her world go round, and she took great interest in keeping up with their lives - all of them being grandma’s favorite: Nora (Codie) Grigsby, Christine (Scott) Bovia, Sarah (Russ) Morris, and Barb Holland; Nicholas (Katie) Jones, Kimberly (Cameron) Hudson, and Laura Jones; Cathryn Blake and Sean Blake and fiancee Taylor Jackson; Nathan Miner and Camden Miner. Marie was also blessed to have six great grandchildren: Calvin; Matilda; Cole; Harper, Hallie, and Hayden.

You don’t get to almost the age of 95 without spirit, resourcefulness, resilience and strength, and Marie embodied all those qualities. She was a sports enthusiast and loved watching the competition of Michigan football and the Detroit Lions and Tigers, like faithfully. She had the mechanical mindset to find the simplest solutions to everyday problems, to the point where you thought, gosh, why didn’t I think of that? She was the developer of the original organization system - if there was an item that could be reused or repurposed to divide a drawer or closet into several compartments, she would creatively use it. And Marie was resilient - she faced every trial with strength and the ability to look forward to the goodness ahead.

Marie had an incredible and long life. We were blessed with her beauty and grace, her talent and creativity, and her attitude and strength. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her and enjoyed her company.

Please join the family to honor and celebrate her life on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. The service will be held at the Allegan Township Hall, 3037 - 118th Avenue, Allegan. There will be a private family graveside burial.

The family is grateful to Wings of Hope for their unwavering care and support. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the hospice organization or an education foundation of your choice.
