Doris Evelyn (Whillock) Schaible, long-time resident of Allegan, died peacefully December 19, 2020 at the age of 93.
Born July 25, 1927 in Edmonton, London, England, to William Clarence and Florence Jane (Southern) Whillock, Doris attended public grammar school in Edmonton. She loved the ocean, and in World War II during the Battle of Britain when London's children were sent away from the city for safety, she accompanied her younger brother and sister to a seaside manor home on the southern coast, where she spent every free moment on the shore. Later, returning home she worked in the British defense industry, first for Klinger's and then Wreschner's, both London manufacturers. During WWII she met Floyd G. Schaible, a United States Army master sergeant in the 85th Infantry stationed in England with the 94th Army Field Hospital. Floyd's bicycle had broken down and Doris rode by and had tools to make the repairs. They were married March 31, 1945 at All Saints Church in Edmonton.
Doris was one of about 40,000 English war brides. At 18 years of age (1945), she sailed to the United States aboard the Henderson with a contingent of other young English brides having the time of their lives on the high seas. After a two-week voyage she landed in New York and boarded a train for a thousand-mile journey to Morris, Illinois, where she and Floyd raised a family and operated a meat market, Circle S Foods. Coming from the world's largest city in England to small-town America was a big cultural adjustment for her, but she adapted to her changed life, and learned to understand and speak American English with good humor. The couple sold their business in 1971, bought the former Nordquist farm near Allegan, and moved there in 1973. They sold the farm in 2000 and moved to a condo in Allegan.
Doris enjoyed singing, homemaking, lawn-and-garden work, baking and knitting. Over the last 25 years, she knitted more than 12,000 pairs of children's mittens for the Santa Claus Girls charity in Grand Rapids, Michigan. For some years she enjoyed the company of several other English war brides in her area, and they went on frequent outings. She lived at Briarwood Assisted Living in Allegan since 2014, where she delighted in frequent visits from granddaughters Whillock (Rios) Koester and Natalie Tice, other family members, and friends. She was a fan of all sports and enjoyed watching English football, especially the Tottenham Hotspurs, her father's favorite team. She remained a lifelong subject of the British Crown and returned to England on occasion to visit her family.
Doris is survived by daughters Jane Rios, Joy Clay (John, deceased) and Judy Tice; a son James (Georgene Agnich); grandchildren Whillock Rios (Ron Koester), Lucia Rios (Tim Steele) and Pearl Rios; Jacob and Natalie Tice; and great-grandchildren Collin and Elliot Rios and Woodrow and Gretta Steele. She also is survived by a brother Eric and sister Elsie in England.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband Floyd (d. May 8, 2014), her parents, brothers William and Alfred, and sisters Joan Illman and Florence Kay.
The family also wishes to thank long-time dear friend Sandy Coffey for her constant support and friendship.
Cremation rites were accorded. Doris will be inurned at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Battle Creek, Michigan, alongside her husband on Friday, July 23, 2021 at 2:00 PM.
