Donald Jay Calkins, 63, of Heath Township, MI passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 6, 2026 in Avery Township. Born September 10, 1962 in Grand Rapids, he was the son of Kathleen Jean (Lantin) Calkins and the late Earl E. Calkins. Donald was an avid collector, especially of coins and teacups, and enjoyed going to local antique shows. He loved to travel and visit lighthouses and spend time at his cottage at Grand Lake.

In addition to his mother, Jean, Donald is survived by his brothers, Bill (Marlane) Calkins and David (Ruthe) Calkins; nephews, Matthew (Thomas Guillot) Calkins and Michael Calkins; step nephews, Glenn (Tiffany) Ftacek and Jeffrey (Brook) Ftacek; five step great-nephews and great-nieces; and his special friend, Kathy Kraft.

The family will receive friends at Gorden Funeral Residence, Hopkins Chapel, on Friday, May 15, 2026 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM and a funeral service will begin at 2:00 PM. Donald will be laid to rest privately at Evergreen Cemetery in Alpena on Monday, May 18, 2026. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
