Obituary

Northrup, Dona H., 89, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at Briarwood Assisted Living in Allegan, Michigan. Mrs. Northrup was born in Holland, Michigan on July 21, 1926, only child of Henry and Henrietta (Brower) Poelakker. Dona was raised on the Todd Farm in Fennville and attended the Pearl Elementary School. She graduated from Holland High School in 1944, where her activities included chorus, the honors program and dancing as a Klompen Dancer in Tulip Time Festival. Dona received a Western Michigan College of Education scholarship for the following year and earned her teacher certificate there. She began her 36 year teaching career at Huyser School where she taught for a year and a half. Dona also taught at the Dunningville School and Hamilton Community Schools. During her years in Hamilton, she taught second grade and was involved in the development of the special education program and taught in the high school special education classroom. In 1966, Dona was hired by the Holland Public Schools to teach the special education classroom at EE Fell Junior High. She received her BS degree in 1959 and MA in 1964 from Western Michigan University and taught special education teachers at WMU for one semester. June 29, 1946 Dona married Norris Northrup and later they were blessed with one daughter, Sally. During their 69 years of marriage they enjoyed many activities together including camping, traveling, and spending time with family. Dona loved children, playing cards, taking day trips, doing counted cross-stitch and sharing her fun-loving sense of humor with her friends. She was a life-long learner and even taught herself to proficiently use a computer. Dona has been a life-long member of the Dunningville Reformed Church where she taught Sunday school, catechism, vacation bible school and contributed to the life of the church and its members through her work with church groups and committees, study groups, special projects, and celebrations. For many years she also wrote and published the monthly church newsletter, The Dew Drop. Her faith and personal witness has been a blessing to many. Dona is survived by her loving husband, Norris Northrup; daughter, Sally Beyer; grandson, Chad Beyer (Matthew Cockrum); brother and sister-in-laws, Doyal and Betty Northrup; nieces and nephews: Connie (Robert) Kirk, Virginia (James) Cronkhite, Ronald (Diane) Northrup, Thomas Northrup, Amy (Steven) Collins and several beloved grand nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Henrietta Poelakker; son-in-law, Gary Beyer; granddaughter, Nicole Beyer; brother and sister in-laws, Elwin and Aileen Northrup. Friends may meet with the family on Sunday, January 31st at Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel from 2 - 6 pm. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 1st at Dunningville Reformed Church at 1 pm, Pastor Chris Timmer and Pastor Bruce Osbeck co-officiating. Interment at Brookside Cemetery.
