He attended Allegan Public Schools and was a United States Army veteran. Dean drove school bus for Allegan Public Schools for five years and worked for Rockwell International for over thirty-seven years, which he retired from in 1988. After retirement, he went to work for Clayborne Court Apartments, Kalamazoo, and Pine Grove Terrace, Allegan, doing maintenance. Dean worked hard for his family and took great pride in making them happy. They raised and showed horses for many years. He loved to tinker around outside and in his garage.
