David Richard Thompson, age 80, of Allegan, Michigan, passed away at his beloved home on May 6, 2025. David was born on August 29,1944 in Allegan to Lee Roy and Nancy (Covault) Thompson. He was one of seven children. David graduated from Allegan High School in 1962 and was soon thereafter drafted into the United States Army in 1965. He served in the Vietnam War and returned home to marry the love of his life, Bette Keck. David had his eye on Bette during their school days at Diamond School, a one-room school in Cheshire Township. David and Bette enjoyed 57 years of marriage and they had two daughters and six grandchildren.
David was the Chief Information Officer and Vice President at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he retired after 36 years. During his time at Borgess, David earned many prestigious awards for the Borgess Hospital Information Technology Division. His innovative computer designs earned him the national award, "Most Wired Hospital" in 2001 at a ceremony in San Diego, California. David loved God, his family and his country. He served on many church boards and was an active member of the Allegan Arts Council and the Allegan Historical Society. David and Bette invested much time and effort restoring the Jewett School in the John Pahl Historical Village at the Allegan County Fair. David was a local artist and historian. He combined those passions by painting historic buildings of Allegan and he authored and published multiple books about one-room school houses and other historical events in Allegan.
Of all his accomplishments, he loved his family most. David followed his grandkids wherever their sports led them and served as team photographer for every sporting event.
David is survived by his wife, Bette Thompson of Allegan; daughters, Leslie (Jim) Kroeze of Baroda, MI, and Heather Thompson of Traverse City, MI; six grandchildren, Alexander, Caleb and Ellie Kroeze of Baroda, MI, Latoya Taylor of Indianapolis,IN, Abby and Jackson Luyk of Traverse City, MI; siblings, Wanda Conley of Allegan, and Shirley (Ben) Arlington of Allegan, and Carolyn (Dean) Durst of Gowen,MI, and Stuart Thompson of Allegan; as well as many nieces and nephews.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Lee Roy and Nancy (Covault) Thompson; in-laws, Leonard and Emma (Buckland) Keck; and his brothers, Raymond and Donald Thompson.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at the Thompson home. The address is 3821 118th Avenue, Allegan, Michigan, with Pastor David Ives officiating the service.
Visitation will be from 10:00am to 11:00am with the funeral service following.
