McGowan, Clyde S. Allegan, MI, died Monday, July 14, 2003. Mr. McGowan was born May 25, 1905 in Spalding, Missouri, the son of Thomas and Ortha Robinson McGowan. He graduated from Spalding High School in 1922 and married Angelin Akerson, who survives, on May 26, 1929 in Hannibal, Missouri. After managing a women's clothing store in Hannibal, he moved his family to Allegan, Michigan in 1945 where he established McGowan's Men's Store and became one of west Michigan's most successful men's clothiers. When he retired in 1967, his son-in-law, Carl Geupel, purchased the business and carried on the family tradition. Clyde was a long-time member of Allegan's First Congregational Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Karen Stegeman of Kalamazoo and Neysa Geupel, and her husband, Carl, of Allegan; four grandchildren and their spouses, and two great grandchildren, John and Linda Stegeman, Lauren Geupel, Thomas and Lori Stegeman and their children, Sean and Paige, and Leslie Geupel; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Akerson; eight nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Bernice, two brothers, Robert and Hugh, and a son-in-law, John L. Stegeman. There will be a private family memorial service. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of Allegan or Wings of Hope Hospice, Allegan.
