Obituary

Allegan, MI, died Thursday, May 8, 2008 at the Allegan County Medical Care Facility. Mr. Smalla was born July 22, 1929 in Allegan, the son of John and Donna (Jackson) Smalla. He was a graduate of Allegan High School, class of 1947, and a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. He was a life member of the Allegan Elks Lodge #1621 and a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict. He was a 50-year member of Local 324 Operating Engineers and had worked for several years at Goodwin and Sons. Surviving are his high school sweetheart, Alice (Petroshus) whom he married on May 21, 1949; 5 sons, James and Debbie Smalla of Plainwell, Steven and Thelma Smalla of Allegan, Thomas and Deb Smalla of Otsego, Jeffrey Smalla of Arizona, and Douglas and Kim Smalla of Allegan; 5 grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Robert and Judy Smalla and Roger and Nancy Smalla all of Allegan; 2 sisters, Beth Thomas of Kalamazoo and Doris and John Janulis of Grand Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents. Friends may meet with the family from 5-8 p.m. Sunday at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel, where the Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. Alan P. Jorgensen, Celebrant. Interment Blessed Sacrament Cemetery with military graveside services by the Otsego V.F.W. Post #3030. Memorial contributions may be made to Allegan County Medical Care Facility.
