Obituary

Bette C. Boerman, 84 of Kalamazoo, formerly of Allegan, died Sunday, October 6, 2002 at Friendship Village, Kalamazoo, where she had lived since 1999. Bette Koller first came to Allegan in the early 1940's to teach kindergarten. She met and then married Henry L. (Red) Boerman, whose barbershop was a fixture in downtown Allegan on December 6, 1947. She continued to teach kindergarten and later third grade in Allegan Public Schools until she retired. She was born on August 20, 1918 in Granville, IL where she grew up. Her parents, John L. Koller, a blacksmith, and Ida Aude Koller, who trained as a nurse were both Danish. She graduated Valedictorian from Hopkins Township High School. She began her college education at LaSalle Peru Oglesby Junior College and completed it at the National College of Education (now part of National Louis University) in Evanston, IL. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and the Allegan Presbyterian Church. Bette Boerman was preceded in death by her parents, husband Red who died in 1997, her older brother Louis Koller, her only child, Henry was stillborn in 1949. She is survived by her two older sisters, Margaret Pelton Van den Akker of Appleton, WI, and Adelaide McEwan of Chicago, a sister-in-law, Lillian Koller of Southbury, CT, one nephew, David Pelton of Slinger, WI, three nieces, Laurie Koller Fasone of Greenwich, CT, Virginia McEwan Harding of Chicago, and Bette McEwan O'Donnell of Omaha, one great nephew and three great nieces, Jonathan Fasone, Vickie Pelton, Karen Fasone and Ellen Harding. She is also survived by cousins, the descendants of her late half sister, Esther Koller Larsen and by the many, many friends who shared good times, meals and picnics first with Bette and Red and then with Bette. There will be no visitation. Funeral services will be held Saturday, 1:00 pm at the GORDEN FUNERAL RESIDENCE, Allegan Chapel. Pastor Joseph Phipps officiating. Interment Oakwood Cemetery, Allegan. Friends will gather afterward at the Allegan Presbyterian Church. Memorials may be made to Dollars for Scholars, the Allegan Presbyterian Church or to Friendship Village.
